The 2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) ended in farcical circumstances, with nobody really sure who was the real Main Event champion. This was due to the hybrid nature of the event, thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Understandably, with the global picture around the virus still unclear, people are asking whether or not there will be a WSOP in Las Vegas during 2021, or indeed whether there will be one at all.
Will the 2021 WSOP Take Place in Las Vegas?
In short, it seems like a resounding "yes". The organisers of the 52nd Annual World Series of Poker have recently confirmed operational dates. The event will begin on September 30th 2021 and run until November 23rd. As usual, the Rio Hotel and Casino will be the venue, though the exact tournament schedule not yet confirmed.
Although specific details are still relatively scare, some WSOP highlights have been confirmed. These include the WSOP Main Event, which will run from November 4th until November 17th, as well as a charity event to raise funds in support of health workers.
WSOP 2021 confirmed highlights:
“The Reunion” (a $5 million guarantee No Limit Hold’em event)
$10,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event
How Likely is the 2021 WSOP Schedule to Change?
Nobody can be certain of what the future holds regarding COVID-19, but barring a catastrophic new wave of cases, it seems highly likely that the 2021 WSOP will go ahead in Las Vegas. Discussions are already being held around safety procedures in the venue. These include socially distanced seating, Plexiglas screens and a requirement to wear masks. Nothing has been decided yet in terms of vaccines and whether WSOP entrants will be required to be vaccinated.
Las Vegas governor Steve Sisolak declared last week that he is “very confident” in the state being fully open again by June 1st. Average cases of COVID-19 per day are below 250 and on a downward trend, while vaccines are increasingly being made available to the public. All in all, it looks like the probability of the 2021 WSOP going ahead is high.
WSOP 2021 Online
This week, the full WSOP Online domestic schedule for 2021 was also confirmed. There will be 33 events in total, beginning on July 1st and running until August 1st. The series will take place on the WSOP.com All-American Poker Network.
WSOP Online 2021 (domestic) confirmed highlights:
$1,000 Online PLO Championship
$3,200 High Roller Championship
$1,000 No Limit Hold’Em Championship
Plans for the international version are yet to be announced. But it seems likely that the GGPoker Network will remain as the platform.
WSOP Europe 2021
As part of the recent press release, provisional plans for the 2021 WSP Europe have also been announced. Rozvadov's King’s Casino in the Czech Republic will be the venue and the series is pencilled in to kick off on November 19th, running until December 8th. As with the Las Vegas equivalent, this is still subject to government approval nearer the time, depending on the COVID-19 situation.
WSOP Europe 2021 confirmed highlights:
15 bracelet events
€10,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event
